A Letter from our CEO

“….And she brought forth her first born, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Dear Friend,

This phrase, “...there was no room for them”, will be repeated every time the Christmas Story is told. It’s just a phrase, but children face this situation every day. When?

It happens every time a “mother” abandons an unwanted child. It happens when babies are dumped in filthy public bathrooms or left in a cheap hotel by a “parent” with no intention of returning. It happens when a “mother” lies unconscious from alcohol or drug abuse and the authorities have come to take the innocent children away.

These are real stories about real children who, by God’s grace, have found their way to the Children’s Village which, for 46 years, has made room for children with no where else to turn. The Children’s Village is not just an “inn”, a place for a night’s shelter from the cold. It is a home, with house parents, and social workers, and helpers of all kind, dedicated to every physical, emotional and spiritual need these poor children have.

All this is made possible by caring people who provide the financial resources required to meet this tremendous need. Thankfully, their generosity will keep The Children’s Village from hanging out a sign saying, “There is no room for you”.

Please help us continue ministering to abused and abandoned children by making a generous donation of any amount to The Children’s Village at Christian City. Your help is critical during these trying economic times. Will you help us? Please?

Have a very merry Christmas,

Bob Crutchfield
President/CEO

Family at The Children's Village

The children at The Children’s Village at Christian City live like your own family—but our family is much larger. Our children still enjoy home cooked meals, family game nights, and devotional time together. There is one main difference between your family and our Children’s Village family; our house parents are taking care of eight children plus their own. Imagine cooking with two ovens because one is too small or using industrial size pots because you have to cook enough food for ten or more people. They do laundry with two washers and dryers because the amount of laundry a week would be overwhelming with only one washer and dryer. Christian City is thankful that we have loving and dedicated house parents that make an impact in our kids’ lives.

If you would like to learn more about The Children’s Village at Christian City, please visit our website at

Providing a Great Education

At The Children’s Village we recognize that education, in addition to a loving Christian home, is one of the most important tools needed for our children to meet and overcome the formidable challenges they have ahead of them. Our partner schools also understand the importance of a strong education, and the social skills required for our children to succeed throughout their lives.

Success has many faces and often can be measured not only by academic achievement but also an increase in self-esteem, mental, and physical health. Success for Ben at The Lighthouse School encompasses all these attributes and is portrayed in many areas of his life. Ben came to Christian City over 7 years ago and has made huge strides in his education, leadership skills, and self-esteem.

He started The Lighthouse Program as a “typical” new student anxious about a new environment, new friends, and new social opportunities. In less than a year, Ben transformed from a shy 10th grader to a leader to all his peers and teachers. He was given the responsibility and title of Safety Monitor by his teacher. He took ownership of this responsibility recognizing that students are encouraged to try their hand at office work, maintenance, and construction. The position of Safety Monitor evolved into supervising maintenance for all the school. Ben is the “go-to” guy for all safety and maintenance and is the first point of contact for al outside vendors. He shines while taking on his leadership roles, and everyone here at the Children’s Village is blessed to witness God’s work in him!

Real Homes, Real Love

Everyone needs a place where they can know without a doubt that they are accepted and loved. A place where there are healthy boundaries borne out of a concern for their welfare, a place where they are cared for and where adults step up and lift the burdens and worries of life off their young shoulders and let them just be kids again. They need a place where the love of Jesus Christ is manifested and made real in every word and touch. That’s the kind of place we strive to be.

For some, coming to us is the revival of a time when life seemed filled with hope. A time before their world had turned into an existence colored only in dingy hues, where the bright cheery light of day seemed to be fading away. Blue skies and bright sunshine had vanished. Others arrive in survival mode, coping with overwhelming challenges of neglect, abuse, and abandonment. They harden their exterior, and project a tough unaffectedness but inside a gnawing emptiness and fear steadily grows. They don’t have the answers for questions they don’t even yet know how to articulate. They stagger under the weight of emotional pain and brokenness that they long to be free of.

This is where The Children’s Village has the opportunity to minister the love of Christ to these children. We can help remove their burden of fear and hurt because we care for them, compelled by our Lord who is in the business of being a tender Father to the hurting, rejected, downtrodden. We support them, encourage them, guide them, and provide their needs. We show them they can trust in adults who will be there for them, who are committed to their success, protection, and their good. We simply treat them like our own. And, in keeping with our motivation, we help them understand that God loves them even more than we, and that His redeeming love can transform and make beautiful things every life.

Everyone Needs Love

Everyone needs love…and everyone needs a good place, a safe place, and a loving place to call home. Many children have never had a home that is a refuge in a life that most of us grew up with a home that is a fortress against life’s storms. Some are battered by neglect, abuse, and fear, and are wearied in a fight never meant to be their own. Here at The Children’s Village, we strive to provide that warm and loving place where they can know without a doubt that they are accepted and loved deeply.

Some children come to us having bounced around in an institutional world never knowing what it means to have someone sincerely care for them, pray for them, and invest time and energy and tenderness into their lives.

Planned Giving-Your Legacy

A "planned gift" is a way of leaving a legacy of helping children and senior adults in need for many years to come. A "planned gift" can be in the form of cash, stock, real estate, life insurance, a percentage of your estate, or a variety of other ways that can be included in or easily added to your will. Since there are substantial tax advantages in "planned giving," we reccomend that you consult with your financial advisor, accountant, or attorney who can advise you on the method most advantageous to you. If you do not have a qualified professional to assist you, let us know and we would be happy to recommend someone to you. Please consider leaving a legacy that will give hope for a better future to the at-risk children and seniors in need.

P.S. Please let us know if you decide to give in this way so we can be sure to thank you!

Football Fun at The Children's Village

The children at The Children’s Village enjoyed family time during a cookout with all of the cottages. During the cookout, the kids played fun NFL football games. The children really enjoyed having everyone together enjoying food and each other. This was a great event for them because the kids have all been working so hard during school; it was a fun event to reward them for all their hard work during school.

Prevention Tips Against Swine Flu

With the numerous amounts of swine flu breakouts around the Metropolitan Atlanta area, Christian City and The Children’s Village would like to take some time to give you some tips to help prevent yourself from this flu season. Swine flu is a respiratory disease and has some elements of a virus found in pigs. It spreads quickly since it is a new virus and we are not immune to it.

The best way to protect you from Swine Flu is to practice good hygiene. By not spreading germs and practicing good hygiene you are ultimately slowing down the spread of the virus. Make sure to always carry tissues to cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing then dispose of the tissue after use. Make sure to also sanitize your hands throughout the day with either soap and hot water or sanitizer gel. It is also important to get enough rest to make sure that your immune system is ready to fight any germs. The Children’s Village at Christian City is hoping that you stay healthy and safe during this flu season. If you want to learn more about The Children’s Village, please visit our website at http://www.christiancity.org.

The Children's Village is One Big Family

At The Children's Village, kids live in cottages with full time Christian house parents. The cottages are a home for these children, just like your family home. The Children's Village family is probably much larger than yours though, with up to eight children per cottage. And, in some cottages, the house parents have their own biological children too. Imagine cooking dinner and doing laundry for your own family; now think about doing those chores with two ovens and two washing machines because the family is twice as big. That's a lot of meals to prepare and a lot of laundry to fold! The house parents truly make an impact on the children at The Children's Village. We salute them for all there hard work and commitment to making each child feel loved. God Bless our house parents!

Piano Lessons at The Children's Village

The Children at The Children's Village at Christian City are starting up piano lessons thanks to Ann Edmonson, who not only donated a piano to the Children's Village but also her time to teach the children. Studies have shown that learning how to play a musical instrument improves brain development, teaches discipline, and reduces stress. The kids at The Children's Village are excited for this new opportunity and are even more excited for their weekly lessons!

Hope for the Children

“In their eyes I truly see a cry for hope. That’s the one thing that I have seen missing and yearned for in the life of nearly every single child and their families. Can you imagine getting up every day and not having any idea what’s going to happen in your life that day? Not to know if you have any hope for any people who care about you, hope for a future, hope for some success in your life, hope that you’re not going to be abused or abandoned. Can you imagine living every day like that? You’ve got to be committed to bringing people hope, to ministering to them. You’ve got to. I can’t think of any better way to sum it up."

Child Sponsorship Program

Christian City has a new focus on fundraising through their Child Sponsorship Program, where you can become a child sponsor for as little as $30 a month. This is an easy way to support The Children’s Village and is very simply done with a check, debit or credit card. This is quickly becoming the “bread and butter” of their fundraising efforts and is helping to bring in new donors who may not be able to give a “major” gift all at once. It helps them to plan strategically when they can count on regular monthly gifts. If you are able to give less than “a buck a day” on a monthly basis, would you please consider this option?

According to Heidi Becker, Christian City’s Director of Marketing and Development, the greatest need is for operational support. “The ongoing expense of caring for numerous children is astronomical in today’s economy. Each month we get a little further behind as donations dwindle and our costs go up. Meeting our day to day expenses of gas, electricity, food, transportation and other basics is a struggle. Over the years, the Fayette County community has been very generous to the children who live in our cottages. Many have become child sponsors over the past year which is a huge help!”

Heidi says, “ Each child has their own story. Each come from such unbelievably sad circumstances. They did not choose to be here. But, God has chosen Christian City to care for them..and in the past, our Fayette County friends have chosen to sacrificially help. Our prayer is that in these lean times, they will continue to help us so that we can continue to serve these kids in the best way possible.”

Education at The Children's Village

Quality education is top priority at the Children’s Village. As appropriate, the children attend SACS accredited Christian Schools where they are given the best education Christian City can afford. Tutors are hired for special needs children. A recent donation from Coweta-Fayette EMC purchased new computers and software for homework needs. Ballet lessons, baseball uniforms, summer camps are all provide for with donations from the community. Proceeds from Graceland Thrift Store help with some costs but it is not nearly enough to cover all the expenses.

The Cottages at The Children's Village

The original cottages built back in the 1960’s needed to be updated and replaced so after years of planning and fundraising, a new Children’s Village was built and opened in August of 2008. With a steady flow of new child residents, the cottages are always bustling with activity. KaBoom! a nonprofit organization, and 150 volunteers built a playground for the kids. The goal is to build “Polly’s Garden” a quite place for reflection, honoring major contributors and children past and present. The garden will have vegetables, fruit and nut trees, pergolas and a “Bricks For Kids” walkway. A swimming pool, baseball field and other recreational facilities are still in the “dreaming” stages and will come as funding provides.

Sarah's Story

Sarah’s father was in prison and her mother was unable to care for her. She was raised at Christian City and now is attending Goizueta School of Business at Emory with the hopes of being a lawyer. Sarah shared, “If it weren’t for Christian City, I don’t know where I would be. I came to Christian City at the end of my 6th grade…I was twelve. I had been living in an emergency shelter, I remember it all very well. I was very mean and I felt like everything bad that had happened in my life was all my fault. My house parents treated me as their own child from the first time we ever met. Even if I was hard to get along with, they still loved me. We had a great life and were very connected as a family. My house parents encouraged me in my school work and in extra activities. When I was struggling academically, they hired a tutor. They were always there to help me with my homework, and then later to help me apply for a good college. I am where I am today, because of the positive influence of my house parents and of Christian City.”

A Look Into The Children's Village...

The Children’s Village cares for children both by private placement and from the Department of Family and Children Services. With a focus on family, education and healing, Christian City is known and respected throughout the State of Georgia for providing a program of excellence. They minister to those who are dealing with life crisis, such as the death of a parent, divorce, or sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. The program’s family environment allows children from every background to have access to a traditional family unit and support systems to help mend their wounded spirits. For many, The Children’s Village will be the only home some children ever know.

The children live in cottages with full time house parents functioning as one big family including daily chores, homework, regular church attendance and traditional sit down meals. Dedicated house parents are an important component of why the Children’s Village has so many successes in turning broken-spirited, angry or sad children, into productive, successful, good hearted kids. Many of these children grow up to become happy, healthy adults who live in Fayette County serving the community as firefighters, school teachers, air line employees or in the legal field.

The Children's Village at Christian City, Mending Spirits, Healing Hearts

I bet you would be shocked to know that every second in the United States, a child is abused. And, that annually, there are over 100,000 abuse cases reported in Georgia alone. Many more children need a safe place to live, free from the threat of abuse in the night, or abandonment in the morning. In 1962, some dedicated Fayette County residents came together with other like minded members of Southwest Christian Church to build such a place, and called it Christian City.

The Children’s Village at Christian City has for the past 44 years, been “home” to over 1,000 abandoned, abused, and neglected children! Christian City is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization that provides these special children a safe haven in a loving, family centered, residential setting. They also provide foster care placement in well qualified homes in the community.

Thank You To Our Child Sponsors!

The child sponsorship program at the Children’s Village at Christian City is one of our most important and yet simple avenues of supporting the ministry to children placed into our safe keeping. It is because of the generosity and concern of our child sponsors that our 43 year old children’s program continues to be successful. These child sponsorships help us to provide a safe haven for children needing out of home placement, as well as nutritious meals, educational opportunities, and Christian house parents directing the spiritual growth of each child. Our children come to us for many reasons and most often they are not related to anything under the control of the child. Children are admitted into our program regardless of race, sex, religion, national origin, or their family’s ability to help pay for their care. Our ministry to children, God’s children, thanks those of you who have been faithfully committed to be a financial supporter as a child sponsor. Your generosity enables us to make a positive difference in the lives of our children! If you are not currently enrolled in this ministry and would like to be a financial child sponsor, or a child mentor, please contact Lauren Kosiba at The Children’s Village at Christian City 770-964-3309 or email her: lauren@christian-city.org.

Learning To Do Unto Others...

Train up a child in the way he should go ... and when he is old he will not depart from it. —Proverbs 22:6

These wonderful words of encouragement in parenting from God’s Word are part of the impetus for the development of The Children’s Village ‘servanthood project’ for our children. In a day and time when children often receive more than they need, we want our children at The Children’s Village to not only be appreciative and respectful of their gifts and care they receive, but to also experience the blessing of reaching out to others. This is a type of “pay it forward” experience for each and every one of them.

We are taking this Bible verse seriously, and we have challenged our house parents in each cottage at The Village to identify a “servanthood project” for their cottage children to be completed no less than once every other month. The area of their service project is determined by the cottage family.

This project has turned into a wonderful opportunity for our children at The Village. They have not only embraced the idea, but it has now expanded into a monthly event for several of our cottages. We are seeing blessings both given and received through their efforts. One of our girls cottages adopted one of our Senior residents on campus and assisted with clean up around the inside and outside of the home.

Recently, several of the boys and their relief house parent volunteered at the FISH HOUSE. The FISH HOUSE is a ministry of Jesus’ Place in Atlanta, serving as a home for men who have been through a drug rehabilitation program, and have committed themselves to remain in the program for 6 months.

The boys from The Children’s Village helped prepare and pack lunch bags for 2 hours to help feed men, women and young people who live on the streets of Atlanta, homeless and hungry. The Director at the FISH HOUSE told house parent Mike Cater that our young men saved them approximately 8 hours of work, preparing just under 500 meals.

We are trusting God that He will use these servant-hood projects in our effort to “train up a child in the way he should go”, so that it will help instill in the hearts and minds of our children that it is indeed more “blessed to give than to receive”. It is our prayer that this might encourage our children to live a life of gratitude and service to others in HIS name, so that “when they are old they will not depart from it”.

Shopping or Donating Goods at Graceland Helps Children

We have all heard the expression “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure” when folks are discussing their “finds” at yard sales, consignment shops, and thrift stores. Some even say that “Things are better the second time around”. Well, we think you will find “treasures” and “bargains galore” and be a blessing to the children in our care.

Perhaps one of the best “treasures” that you may not be aware of, is that the net proceeds from the sales at Graceland Thrift Store are used to help cover the educational costs of our children at The Children’s Village. Many of the children here come to us with educational, and emotional deprivation. They sometimes have experienced developmental and educational difficulties that require specialized educational settings and assistance to complete their basic education plan.
Graceland Thrift Store is open for donations Monday through Saturday from 9:00am-3:00pm, and for your shopping convenience Tues, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:30am-2:00pm. For more information about Graceland Thrift Store visit our website at
http://www.christiancity.org or call Marlond Fyffe, Graceland Director at 770-969-9957. Come find your treasure!

Sponsorship Helps Bring Hope

Abuse takes many forms but it always casts a shadow deep into the soul of the child struggling to make sense of it. Children coming to the Children’s Village at Christian City are too often familiar with the gnawing pain of abandonment, neglect, verbal, emotional, physical or sexual abuse — and the fear and hopelessness that usually tags along. Rare is the child who can remain strong in the face of such challenges. Some lose heart, wondering if God is good, if He really loves them, or if adults can be trusted…or if the sun will ever shine again. Some become downtrodden and defeated, others may lash out.

Because of your kindness as a sponsor, our compassionate houseparents at the Children’s Village can put their arms around these kids and welcome them into a safe, and loving home. They begin opening the windows to their world, letting the light of Christ’s love stream in. They speak kindly to them, give them hugs, worry over them, help them with their homework, and provide food, clothing, and guidance. They pray with them, and tell them that God loves them...and that they love them.

These precious ones who have sometimes experienced more pain in their short lives than many of us will know in a lifetime, can begin to lift their heads to the light of hope, provision, trust and a new day. Child Sponsors make it possible for the Children’s Village to effect meaningful change to their future, to impact them in ways that will last a lifetime.

Your sponsorship funds bring needy children the things every parent wants to provide their own child. Safety, security, trust, love, guidance and instruction and the boundaries children need to feel safe and protected. For over 45 years, this ministry has received hurting children through it’s doors and embraced the privilege of parenting them as any Godly parent would their own. The changed lives that have resulted and continue to happen are a testament to God’s grace and the generosity of you who stand with these children, through your sacrificial giving. Please help us continue!

Real Love, Bringing Hope & Change

Our children benefit deeply from the loving investment of dedicated houseparents. They couldn't do what they do without YOUR investment.
God empowers our house parents to work through Him in every interaction they have with the children in their home. Through Him, houseparents provide the love and a solid foundation our children need for success. This success is portrayed daily in spiritual and social victories, educational achievements, and reunification of families.

Imagine a snapshot of children as they experience the joy and excitement of baptism. Or, the furrowed brow of a child contemplating the best way to give back to his community. Imagine a giddy young girl asking her houseparent to her school’s father-daughter dance. Or, the triumphant shout as a young lady opens a long-awaited envelope from a great college to discover she’s been accepted into the freshman class. These “Kodak moments” are not uncommon at The Children’s Village. We are fortunate to experience these life-changing events one child at a time.

Congressman Lynn Westmoreland sends "Chair-ity" Event Letter

“I want to thank everyone (attending the “Chair-ity” event) for their support of Christian City, which provides an incredible ministry.”

Christian City’s leaders are dear friends who have given their lives to serving the Lord by serving others. My previous experiences with Christian City charities have left me humbled by the great work they are doing. The work at Christian City has touched my family deeply. My wife Joan’s niece and nephew lived there briefly. Joan’s mother and my uncle used the hospice facility and my grandfather lived in the Christian City nursing home. For me personally, I spent many happy evenings on the Christian City softball fields (now the site of a new building) and currently I’m proud to serve on the advisory committee. Joan and I renew our commitment to Christian City each Christmas by acting as Santa for two children living there.

As Christians, we are called to help “the least of these.” Christian City does much more than provide for the physical needs of our society’s most precious and vulnerable assets, our children; it also gives life lessons, love, guidance and Christian mentoring.

The Bible tells us that in God’s Kingdom the first shall be last and the last shall be first. With your attendance and support tonight, you are putting the last first. You are making a positive difference in a child’s life. May God bless each of you and may He continue to bless Christian City.”- Lynn Westmoreland, US Congressman, 3rd District of Georgia

Simon's Story

Simon (not his real name) came to Christian City in dire straits.

He was wheelchair bound because of a progressive disease that causes bones to become thin and brittle. There was a chance that if he tried to walk, his legs wouldn’t support him and break, but if he didn’t start walking again soon, he would have lost the ability permanently. So it was terrifying to Simon to try to walk on his own.

Ever since coming to Christian City, the houseparents have encouraged him to try standing on his own while holding onto something like a counter or table, and then try using a walker inside instead of the wheelchair. The encouragement progressed and now he is able to move around freely without his wheelchair or a walker. He’s enjoyed playing outside with the other kids and has even danced for the first time at some of the Christmas parties.

Simon still has a way to go with strengthening his body, but he has made tremendous progress! This past month he even went with his housedad on a Christian retreat in Tennessee. Every day there was heavy walking involved and even the housedad said his calves were burning after one day of walking. But Simon never complained and he kept up with everyone, walking the entire time. He’s no longer afraid of crowds and he’s just as proud of his progress as all of the houseparents and staff at Christian City.

Way to Go Simon!

There are so many ways you can help our children…Please consider becoming a child sponsor. Your $30 a month will help provide a safe and loving home, food, clothing, medical care, educational needs and all the necessities of life to a deserving child. Won’t you please be a blessing to a child today?

Taking Wii to the Next Level!

Christian City Seniors Have A "Wii" Bit Of Fun In The Name Of Physical Therapy

Who knew that the hottest pastime for teens would also become the hottest trend among seniors? After all, what could these two groups possibly have in common? The answer can be found in household living rooms and senior facilities across America, most recently at Christian City… the Wii video game by Nintendo.

The Wii game that enthralls millions of teens has proved remarkably effective in improving the lives of some seniors as well. It is fast becoming a craze in rehab therapy for patients recovering from strokes, broken bones, surgery and even combat injuries.

The Gift of Gas...Fuel Prices are hurting us too!

Economic hardship is hitting us all, especially at the pumps. At the Children's Village, the high price of gas is making it more and more difficult for our house parents to fill up their tanks in order to take our children where they need to be. Whether it is school, a doctor's appointment, basketball, music, dance, a part time job, or other activities, our house parents are on the road constantly transporting our children. Won't you please help out by mailing in a gift or gift card to be used to help meet this vital, necessary need? No amount is too small and each donation is tax deductible. Thank you and may God Bless you for your generous spirit in these uncertain times.

Help them Dream & Help them Soar!

Spring has arrived with storms and sunshine much like the life experiences of many of the children placed with us at The Children’s Village. Our children have often withstood the storms of abuse, neglect, and difficult home situations that most of us have never experienced. But now, they bask in the sunshine of love, security, and safety provided by Christian house parents and the programs of The Children’s Village.

The proverbial statement “It takes a village to raise a child” seems appropriate in describing our need for your partnership in the support of The Children’s Village. It takes all of us to provide the necessary funds and efforts that are needed to continue this successful ministry to help “raise a child” and most importantly, to raise children in a Christian environment.

Invest in What Matters

Nowadays, investing can be complex, complicated, risky, and sometimes even scary. But it doesn't have to be! Especially when you are investing in providing a better life for a child. The Children’s Village offers an “investment” choice that, in a very real sense, is ironclad safe — the lives of abused and abandoned children! It’s an investment that can last literally forever. Stocks have struggled, the housing market has been reaching for the bottom, but providing for a child in need is an investment that yields immediate, long-term, and eternal dividends!

Out Of The Shadows Into The Light Of Hope

Sponsorship Helps Bring Hope
Abuse takes many forms but it always casts a shadow deep into the soul of the child struggling to make sense of it. Children coming to the Children’s Village at Christian City are too often familiar with the gnawing pain of abandonment, neglect, verbal, emotional, physical or sexual abuse — and the fear and hopelessness that usually tags along. Rare is the child who can remain strong in the face of such challenges. Some lose heart, wondering if God is good, if He really loves them, or if adults can be trusted.. . or if the sun will ever shine again.
