Local Artists Get Involved with the 4th Annual Children's Chair-ity Event Benefitting The Children's Village

Local artists like Vicki Turner are starting to work on their beautiful hand-painted children-sized and holiday themed chairs for the 4th Annual Children’s Chair-ity Event benefiting The Children’s Village at Christian City. All chairs will be included in a "Santa’s Workshop" Silent Auction as well as a wide range of items donated by local businesses that you can purchase for that special someone. The volunteer driven event chaired by Angela Bean is hosted by community leaders including Ms. Turner, Congressman and Mrs. Lynn Westmoreland, and others who have supported The Children’s Village kids over the years. Sponsors such as AT&T, BB&T Reece Insurance, Georgia Power, Brent Scarborough & Co, Coweta-Fayette EMC and more are coming together to ensure the many kids at the Children’s Village enjoy a happy holiday.

The event will take place on December 2nd from 5:30-7:30pm at The Dolce-Atlanta in Peachtree City. It will be a wonderful event with delicious food, refreshments, festive music, and holiday cheer to kick off the season. Tickets are $30 each which sponsors a child at The Children’s Village for one month. All are welcome!

Christian City's Pancake Breakfast and Autumn Festival

Christian City is hosting their annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, October 30th from 8-10am in the parking lot behind the Welcome Center at Christian City located at 7345 Red Oak Road in Union City. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance at The Children’s Village or at the event. After you’ve enjoyed the Pancake Breakfast, make sure you make your way down to Graceland Thrift Store to enjoy their Autumn Festival! Graceland Thrift Store has great prices on new and used merchandise including holiday decorations, clothing, furniture, and crafts. Homemade baked goods will be sold by local churches and other vendors. Ministers Play FREE at Christian City's I Golf "Fore" Kids Tournament

The Children’s Village will be hosting our Annual Fall Golf Classic on September 30th at Eagle's Landing, in Stockbridge GA to benefit the boys and girls who live in the cottages at Christian City. Ministers play FREE with three paying golfers. This is a wonderful opportunity to help kids and spend some quality time with your church members.

The tournament includes two special opportunities to win—a corporate challenge and a church challenge where the winner receives a $500 prize to put toward the ministry of their choice, traveling trophy, and free entry next year to defend their title! The winner of the corporate challenge receives a special trophy.

Last year’s winner, First Christian Church of Mableton, is invited back to defend their title and play for free! The entry fee is $125 per person or $450 for a four person team. Registration starts at 9:30am and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, range balls, lunch, refreshments, and a post tournament dinner.

Eagle Scout Neil Dhruv Organizes Project to Help Kids

Neil Dhruv, a sophomore at Woodward Academy, has been working towards being an Eagle Scout for years. He recently achieved the highest ranking honor in Boy Scouts when he completed his Eagle Scout project benefiting The Children’s Village at Christian City. Each Eagle Scout was to create and design a project that benefits the community. Neil chose to handcraft wood picnic tables for less fortunate children to enjoy.

Three years ago, Neil went to India and saw a number of children living in an orphanage, and ever since has been thinking of how to help children in need. When the time came for Neil to choose his Eagle Scout project, it seemed like a perfect fit to help The Children’s Village because it was nearby his Peachtree City home. Neil raised the funds and built four picnic tables with the help of his friends and fellow scouts. The kids and house parents will now be able to have a place they can sit to enjoy eating and visiting outdoors. Bob Crutchfield, President and CEO of Christian City expressed, "We are grateful for the hard work and dedication Neil put forth for his Eagle Scout project. What a great example he is to other young people! When you see kids helping kids it is very moving. Neil is an impressive young man and we are privileged to know him and call him a friend."

Volunteers Plan the 4th Annual Chair-ity Event for The Children's Village

It is Christmas in July for the volunteers of the 4th Annual Chair-ity Event benefiting The Children’s Village at Christian City. The volunteers have already started meeting to plan this wonderful holiday event hosted by community leaders. The event takes place on December 2nd from 5:30-7:30pm at The Dolce-Atlanta in Peachtree City. Local artists will be painting children’s chairs, and there will be a “Santa’s Workshop” Silent Auction where guests can pick up a gift for that special someone.

The volunteer committee is very excited for the upcoming event as there will be delicious food, festive music, and great networking opportunities. Last year’s event was huge success. With the help of 50 sponsors, volunteers, and local artists, over $36,000 was raised for the abandoned and abused children who live in the cottages at Christian City. The Children's Village in Need of Child Sponsors

The Children’s Village at Christian City is a residential, family centered program which cares for abandoned, abused, and neglected children who have no other safe place to go. The children live in cottages with full time house parents on the Christian City campus located in Union City. Most of the children come to The Children’s Village with nothing but the clothing on their backs, meaning the bulk of financial support for providing the basics comes from caring individuals in the community, churches, businesses and civic groups. Christian City provides food, clothing, medical and dental assistance, education in private and special needs schools, to all the children who arrive on their door step regardless of race, religion, or ability to pay. The most practical and convenient way to help is through the Child Sponsorship Program, a monthly financial sponsorship. For as little as a dollar a day, $30 a month, you can become a sponsor and make a huge impact in a child’s life.

Children's Village Snow Day!

The kids had a wonderful time on Friday, February 12 because of the blanket of snow that fell in Georgia! Christian City Celebrates Forty-five Years

Christian City celebrates forty-five years of ministry to children and seniors on February 14th. Christian City opened the first children’s cottage to eight little boys affected by situations of abuse and abandonment on Valentine’s Day, 1965. Since then, Christian City and the Children’s Village have been "home" to over 1,000 children and thousands of retiring seniors and the elderly through their Life Lease Homes, HUD housing apartments, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, an assisted living facility, and the first ever free standing Alzheimer’s Care Center in Georgia.

The Children Need Your Help

The children who live in the cottages at the Children’s Village are products of an unstable environment. These children had their childhood taken from them by situations of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. All these kids should have to worry about is what they want to be when they grow up, but the children who come to us have had to worry violence, where their next meal was coming from, and where they were going to sleep. The Children’s Village provides a safe haven for these children so that their only worry is whether they want to be a teacher, veterinarian, or an astronaut.

Self Esteem in Children

Self esteem is an important part of your child’s development. A child with high self esteem can achieve wonderful things in his/her future like being a leader in the community and company. Building self esteem in children who had theirs taken away from them is extremely challenging but not impossible. Many of the children who come to live in the cottages at the Children’s Village have little to no self esteem when they first arrive. With the help of loving house parents, our children have gained the self esteem that is so desperately needed after their difficult past.

When you are building a child’s self esteem, it is important to remember to always be positive.
Children need constant reassurance and praise for their job well done no matter how large or small the accomplishment. Remember to praise your children after they receive an "A" on a test, win a soccer game, or finally learned how to play "Mary Had A Little Lamb" on the piano. Even if your child fails at an activity remember to be positive and support them by saying "I know you can do better next time." Reassurance from a parent, guardian, or adult role model can go along way in creating a strong self esteem.

Prayer at the Children's Village

Prayer and devotionals is an important part of what we teach the children who live in the cottages at the Children’s Village. Many of the children who come to live here do not have a strong relationship with Jesus, and some have never been introduced to the works in the Bible. Our house parents make prayer and learning about the God’s will an integral part of their everyday life. Many of the children have decided to accept Jesus in their life and have been baptized while living at the Children’s Village.

Graceland Thrift Store

Graceland thrift store opened in 1984 and was named after "Mama Grace" Duke, who had recently retired from being a house parent. "Mama Grace" started this ministry as a yard sale to raise money for the Home for Children.

The Graceland thrift store at Christian City is filled with wonderful treasures at great prices! All of the proceeds from the store are primarily used for educational needs for the children who live in the cottages at the Children’s Village at Christian City. The store hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 9:30am-2:00pm. Come by for some great values and friendly service!

Keeping your Kids Healthy

The Children’s Village would like to give you a few helpful hints to keep your child healthy. During the winter months, kids are getting sick with the flu, common cold, and strep throat. It is important to take preventative measures against germs so that your child is healthy especially when they are around other sick children. Make sure your child stays hydrated with water and to eats a balanced diet. It is important that your child is also getting enough sleep; without enough sleep and a balanced diet, the body has a weaker immune system. Your child should also wash his/her hands throughout the day and especially before ingesting any food.

Compassion for Children

The children who live in the cottages at the children’s village are all victims of abuse, neglect, abandonment, and/or other unfortunate circumstances. When these children come to Christian City, their spirits are crushed, they are angry and defensive, and they do not trust the adults in their lives. Our house parents work with these children and love them unconditionally so that they understand that this relationship is different from relationships they had in the past. The relationship of a house parent with a child is full of love and respect; however, it does take some time for the child to fully be able to love in return.

Our house parents have compassion for these children and love them as their own. The Children’s Village is creating a childhood for these children, which was taken away from them at such an early age. Reporting Child Abuse

Child abuse is a considerable problem in the United States and throughout the world. There are over 100,000 cases of child abuse reported in Georgia alone. This number alone is alarmingly high, but unfortunately child abuse goes unreported on a daily basis. Children stay in unsafe environments because they are too scared to say anything or because they do not know any better. It is important to report any cases of abuse to the authorities so that these children can receive help and the care that they need.

The Children’s Village at Christian City is a safe haven for children who have been victims of abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment. The Children’s Village provides the care that these children need, while also providing them with the love they desperately want. This phrase, “...there was no room for them”, will be repeated every time the Christmas Story is told. It’s just a phrase, but children face this situation every day. When?

It happens every time a “mother” abandons an unwanted child. It happens when babies are dumped in filthy public bathrooms or left in a cheap hotel by a “parent” with no intention of returning. It happens when a “mother” lies unconscious from alcohol or drug abuse and the authorities have come to take the innocent children away.

These are real stories about real children who, by God’s grace, have found their way to the Children’s Village which, for 46 years, has made room for children with no where else to turn. The Children’s Village is not just an “inn”, a place for a night’s shelter from the cold. It is a home, with house parents, and social workers, and helpers of all kind, dedicated to every physical, emotional and spiritual need these poor children have.

All this is made possible by caring people who provide the financial resources required to meet this tremendous need. Thankfully, their generosity will keep The Children’s Village from hanging out a sign saying, “There is no room for you”.

Children Painting Chairs

The children had a great time painting the miniature chairs for the 3rd Annual Hollingsworth House Chair-ity Event. All of the miniature chairs were given to everyone who signed up to be a child sponsor for the month of December. The children were very creative with all of the different chairs they painted. Some of the chairs were decorated with sports teams, some with designs, and some with flowers. Everyone in attendance at the event loved the chairs, and loved that the children painted took the time to paint each of them.

Meet Terrie Ahneman...A Hollingsworth House Chair-ity Event Artist

Terrie Ahneman is one of the 3rd Annual Hollingsworth House Chair-ity Event artists. She painted a beautiful chair with flowers and birds. This chair would be a great addition to any home.

Terrie’s number one source of relaxation is painting, which she loves because she can express her vision as she wishes. Pastels, oils, then on to water colors and acrylic, Terrie works with pastels, oils, water colors, and acrylic, and she enjoys mixing mediums sometime in the same painting. A sketchpad and pencils are always in her bag.

At Marymount College in the Hudson Valley, New York, she took part in a grant which developed the use of art as a therapy. The program was very successful and resulted in programs for the elderly as well as the young. Terrie studied with George Sutherland, a prominent Watercolorist from New England and was very active with the Greenwich Art Society. In addition to gallery shows, she has been involved in the design of greeting cards and wearing apparel.

Meet Helena Marette...A Hollingsworth House Chair-ity Event Artist

Helena Marette is one of the 3rd Annual Hollingsworth House Chair-ity Event artists. She created a unique rot iron and fabric, heart chair. This unique chair would be a great addition for any living room or bedroom.

Helena Marette is an accomplished fiber & metal artist with a diversified list of achievements. During the 1990s Helena moved to Georgia where she became an avid creator of recycled artwork, Metalsmith, and fiberartist.

In 2004, she was chosen to demonstrate both, her felting and jewelry techniques in the HGTV show “Crafters Coast to Coast”. Episode: HCC2 C-156. Broadcasting this newfound felting medium to a worldwide HGTV audience certainly helped propel the art form to the enormous popularity it currently holds.

Helena's artwork was published in Candie Cooper’s book: Felted Jewelry - released by Lark Books in Spring 2007. Helena participates in dozens of annual festivals and art shows around the Metro Atlanta area. She has also been featured in several magazines and periodicals, and currently exhibits at boutiques and galleries.

Vicki Turner is one of the 3rd Annual Hollingsworth House Chair-ity Event artists. She painted a beautiful magnolia chair. This chair would be perfect for every southern home.

Vicki Turner, an artist that lives in Fayetteville, Georgia has 37 years of experience in Art and Design. Her paintings are displayed in local banks, bookstores and galleries in Georgia and Tennessee. She enjoys painting in oils, acrylics and watercolor. Her paintings are known for her great attention to detail!

In 2008, Congressman Lynn Westmoreland chose Vicki to paint a Christmas tree ornament for the White House’s “State” tree in Washington D.C. Last December Vicki traveled to Washington for the special artist reception hosted by First Lady Laura Bush at the White House. In April 2009, Vicki’s “Blue Ribbon” painting of the oldest Courthouse in the State of Georgia is now featured on the front of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce History Book.

Yvonne Ford is one of the 3rd Annual Hollingsworth House Chair-ity Event artists. She painted a child Adirondack chair with a painted scene from Horton Hears a Who. The chair would be a wonderful addition for a child’s room or for any Dr. Seuss fans.

Yvonne Ford, a Miami native, graduated from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and has worked steadily as an illustrator, graphic designer, and web designer. Her clients include book cover designs and page illustrations for FC&A Publishing, creating educational materials for Gallopade International, and designing a series of “Christian Critters” cross-stitch pattern books for Color Charts. Her most recent works include illustrating The Adventures of Sara, The Pineapple Cat, and The Peachtree City Night Before Christmas.

Yvonne’s loving family includes her husband, a daughter, two sons, a son-in-law, and Franky the dog. They are all avid campers and are active in their church.

The children at The Children’s Village at Christian City live like your own family—but our family is much larger. Our children still enjoy home cooked meals, family game nights, and devotional time together. There is one main difference between your family and our Children’s Village family; our house parents are taking care of eight children plus their own. Imagine cooking with two ovens because one is too small or using industrial size pots because you have to cook enough food for ten or more people. They do laundry with two washers and dryers because the amount of laundry a week would be overwhelming with only one washer and dryer. Success for Ben at The Lighthouse School encompasses all these attributes and is portrayed in many areas of his life. Ben came to Christian City over 7 years ago and has made huge strides in his education, leadership skills, and self-esteem.

He started The Lighthouse Program as a “typical” new student anxious about a new environment, new friends, and new social opportunities. In less than a year, Ben transformed from a shy 10th grader to a leader to all his peers and teachers. He was given the responsibility and title of Safety Monitor by his teacher. He took ownership of this responsibility recognizing that students are encouraged to try their hand at office work, maintenance, and construction. The position of Safety Monitor evolved into supervising maintenance for all the school. Ben is the “go-to” guy for all safety and maintenance and is the first point of contact for al outside vendors. He shines while taking on his leadership roles, and everyone here at the Children’s Village is blessed to witness God’s work in him!

Real Homes, Real Love

Everyone needs a place where they can know without a doubt that they are accepted and loved. A place where there are healthy boundaries borne out of a concern for their welfare, a place where they are cared for and where adults step up and lift the burdens and worries of life off their young shoulders and let them just be kids again. They need a place where the love of Jesus Christ is manifested and made real in every word and touch. That’s the kind of place we strive to be.

For some, coming to us is the revival of a time when life seemed filled with hope. A time before their world had turned into an existence colored only in dingy hues, where the bright cheery light of day seemed to be fading away. Blue skies and bright sunshine had vanished. Others arrive in survival mode, coping with overwhelming challenges of neglect, abuse, and abandonment. They harden their exterior, and project a tough unaffectedness but inside a gnawing emptiness and fear steadily grows. They don’t have the answers for questions they don’t even yet know how to articulate. They stagger under the weight of emotional pain and brokenness that they long to be free of.

This is where The Children’s Village has the opportunity to minister the love of Christ to these children. We can help remove their burden of fear and hurt because we care for them, compelled by our Lord who is in the business of being a tender Father to the hurting, rejected, downtrodden. We support them, encourage them, guide them, and provide their needs. We show them they can trust in adults who will be there for them, who are committed to their success, protection, and their good. We simply treat them like our own. And, in keeping with our motivation, we help them understand that God loves them even more than we, and that His redeeming love can transform and make beautiful things every life.

Foster Care...It's A Family Thing!

The Children’s Village at Christian City Foster Care Program assists families with children from birth to age five, by placing their children in Christ-centered community based homes where family role models and an atmosphere of love, discipline, and nurturing are provided.
Foster families are chosen after diligent review and approval process and the completion of IMPACT training which is required and approved by the Georgia Department of Human Resources. Christian City foster care families consist of a husband a wife committed to serving the Lord in a local church body. One spouse must be in home full time to supervise the care and nurturing of the child(ren).

The Forster Care program is committed to loving children and their families, while working towards family reunification. We are always looking for solid Christian foster care families. The Metro Fayette Kiwanis Club recently donated $600 in September to The Children’s Village at Christian City. President/CEO Bob Crutchfield Reveals Strategic Plan for the Future

Union City, GA - ChristianCity’s President/CEO Bob Crutchfield recently addressed a packed Town Hall meeting to reveal plans for expansion and growth. “After years of hard work, the Board of Trustees approved a long range, strategic plan for ChristianCity”, Mr. Crutchfiled stated. He then explained the ambitious plans for campus improvements as well as new services to become available over the next several months. ChristianCity sits on almost 500 acres just south of AtlantaHartsfieldAirport in Union City, and is home to over 1,000 seniors, as well as being a residential program for less fortunate children.

Some Campus Renovations will take place soon, while more expansive infrastructure changes will be possible as the economy improves. There has already been an increase in clinical staffing, new operational policies and procedures, and new technologies. Additional services becoming available in the next couple of months include: home health services, point of sale pharmacy, hospice care, SOURCE, expanded physical/speech/occupational therapy, and renovations of portions of the skilled nursing and assisted living facilities.

The major infrastructure plans include: new assisted living and memory support facilities, internal roadways, additional life leasing housing, life and activity center, senior community center, health club and pool, a new ministry to developmentally disabled adults, phase two of The Children’s Village, and much more.

A major part of Mr. Crutchfield’s presentation was devoted to extraordinary efforts being made to ensure and strengthen ChristianCity’s commitment to quality care according to the principles of the Christian faith. “We are here to be loving people who love people in need in the name of Christ. That was our mission in the beginning and remains our mission and calling today”, Crutchfield said.Crutchfield went on to say, “ChristianCity’s committed staff has been providing quality residential, health and social services, and opportunities for spiritual growth since 1965. Our 44 year reputation for excellent care for seniors comes from our passion to radiate the love of Christ. This results in extraordinary care, because it’s not our job—it’s our mission!”

We are seeking a married couple who is interested in a long-term commitment in caring for children ages 5-17 years in a residential setting. Christian City is a faith-based organization and therefore is seeking couples who can accept, model, and promote our core values. All cottages at The Children’s Village attend a locally assigned congregation that is affiliated with the Independent Christian Church.

Both parents must be at least 25 years of age, have experience in working with children or parenting, and hold a high school diploma or GED certificate (although college and professional training is preferred). Both parents must successfully complete a criminal records background check, drug screening, finger-printing, and motor vehicles check. There is a non-smoking requirement as well.

Yesterday, September 30, Tyson Clabo from the Atlanta Falcons came to Christian City to have a pizza party with the children at The Children’s Village. Everyone was excited to meet Tyson Clabo, and before the pizza party the children were throwing the football and having a great time outside. After enjoying pizza with Tyson, the children presented him with a football with everyone’s signature at The Children’s Village. Prevention Tips Against Swine Flu

With the numerous amounts of swine flu breakouts around the Metropolitan Atlanta area, Christian City and The Children’s Village would like to take some time to give you some tips to help prevent yourself from this flu season. Swine flu is a respiratory disease and has some elements of a virus found in pigs. It spreads quickly since it is a new virus and we are not immune to it.

The best way to protect you from Swine Flu is to practice good hygiene. By not spreading germs and practicing good hygiene you are ultimately slowing down the spread of the virus. Make sure to always carry tissues to cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing then dispose of the tissue after use. Make sure to also sanitize your hands throughout the day with either soap and hot water or sanitizer gel. It is also important to get enough rest to make sure that your immune system is ready to fight any germs. The Children's Village is One Big Family

At The Children's Village, kids live in cottages with full time Christian house parents. The cottages are a home for these children, just like your family home. The Children's Village family is probably much larger than yours though, with up to eight children per cottage. And, in some cottages, the house parents have their own biological children too. Imagine cooking dinner and doing laundry for your own family; now think about doing those chores with two ovens and two washing machines because the family is twice as big. That's a lot of meals to prepare and a lot of laundry to fold! The house parents truly make an impact on the children at The Children's Village. Piano Lessons at The Children's Village

Christian City has a new focus on fundraising through their Child Sponsorship Program, where you can become a child sponsor for as little as $30 a month. This is an easy way to support The Children’s Village and is very simply done with a check, debit or credit card. This is quickly becoming the “bread and butter” of their fundraising efforts and is helping to bring in new donors who may not be able to give a “major” gift all at once. It helps them to plan strategically when they can count on regular monthly gifts. If you are able to give less than “a buck a day” on a monthly basis, would you please consider this option?

According to Heidi Becker, Christian City’s Director of Marketing and Development, the greatest need is for operational support. “The ongoing expense of caring for numerous children is astronomical in today’s economy. Each month we get a little further behind as donations dwindle and our costs go up. Meeting our day to day expenses of gas, electricity, food, transportation and other basics is a struggle. Over the years, the Fayette County community has been very generous to the children who live in our cottages. Many have become child sponsors over the past year which is a huge help!”

Heidi says, “ Each child has their own story. Each come from such unbelievably sad circumstances. They did not choose to be here. But, God has chosen Christian City to care for them..and in the past, our Fayette County friends have chosen to sacrificially help. Our prayer is that in these lean times, they will continue to help us so that we can continue to serve these kids in the best way possible.”

Quality education is top priority at the Children’s Village. As appropriate, the children attend SACS accredited Christian Schools where they are given the best education Christian City can afford. Tutors are hired for special needs children. A recent donation from Coweta-Fayette EMC purchased new computers and software for homework needs. Ballet lessons, baseball uniforms, summer camps are all provide for with donations from the community. Proceeds from Graceland Thrift Store help with some costs but it is not nearly enough to cover all the expenses.

The Cottages at The Children's Village

The original cottages built back in the 1960’s needed to be updated and replaced so after years of planning and fundraising, a new Children’s Village was built and opened in August of 2008. With a steady flow of new child residents, the cottages are always bustling with activity. KaBoom! a nonprofit organization, and 150 volunteers built a playground for the kids. The goal is to build “Polly’s Garden” a quite place for reflection, honoring major contributors and children past and present. The garden will have vegetables, fruit and nut trees, pergolas and a “Bricks For Kids” walkway. A swimming pool, baseball field and other recreational facilities are still in the “dreaming” stages and will come as funding provides.

Sarah's Story

Sarah’s father was in prison and her mother was unable to care for her. She was raised at Christian City and now is attending Goizueta School of Business at Emory with the hopes of being a lawyer. Sarah shared, “If it weren’t for Christian City, I don’t know where I would be. I came to Christian City at the end of my 6th grade…I was twelve. I had been living in an emergency shelter, I remember it all very well. I was very mean and I felt like everything bad that had happened in my life was all my fault. My house parents treated me as their own child from the first time we ever met. Even if I was hard to get along with, they still loved me. We had a great life and were very connected as a family. My house parents encouraged me in my school work and in extra activities. When I was struggling academically, they hired a tutor. They were always there to help me with my homework, and then later to help me apply for a good college. I am where I am today, because of the positive influence of my house parents and of Christian City.”

A Look Into The Children's Village...

The Children’s Village cares for children both by private placement and from the Department of Family and Children Services. With a focus on family, education and healing, Christian City is known and respected throughout the State of Georgia for providing a program of excellence. They minister to those who are dealing with life crisis, such as the death of a parent, divorce, or sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. The program’s family environment allows children from every background to have access to a traditional family unit and support systems to help mend their wounded spirits. The children live in cottages with full time house parents functioning as one big family including daily chores, homework, regular church attendance and traditional sit down meals. Publix Super Markets And Customers Raise More Than $331,000 During Holiday Fundraiser To Benefit 34 Regional Charities

Union City, GA—Publix Super Markets Atlanta Division raised $331,834 during the annual Food For All holiday season fundraiser that appeared in stores from November 16 to December 27, 2008. The six-week Food For All campaign gave customers the opportunity to make a $1, $3 or $5 contribution by simply selecting a coupon and having the cashier scan it. The donation appeared on the register receipt. Thirty-four regional charities were presented with checks during the month of May, including a $ 3,135.65 check to The Children’s Village at Christian City to support the abandoned, neglected and abused children who live in the cottages on their campus. Since 1995, Publix Atlanta Division has raised more than $2,348,000 for local charities through the holiday season Food For All program.

Learning To Do Unto Others...

Train up a child in the way he should go ... and when he is old he will not depart from it. —Proverbs 22:6

These wonderful words of encouragement in parenting from God’s Word are part of the impetus for the development of The Children’s Village ‘servanthood project’ for our children. In a day and time when children often receive more than they need, we want our children at The Children’s Village to not only be appreciative and respectful of their gifts and care they receive, but to also experience the blessing of reaching out to others. This is a type of “pay it forward” experience for each and every one of them.

We are taking this Bible verse seriously, and we have challenged our house parents in each cottage at The Village to identify a “servanthood project” for their cottage children to be completed no less than once every other month. The area of their service project is determined by the cottage family.

This project has turned into a wonderful opportunity for our children at The Village. They have not only embraced the idea, but it has now expanded into a monthly event for several of our cottages. We are seeing blessings both given and received through their efforts. One of our girls cottages adopted one of our Senior residents on campus and assisted with clean up around the inside and outside of the home.

Recently, several of the boys and their relief house parent volunteered at the FISH HOUSE. The FISH HOUSE is a ministry of Jesus’ Place in Atlanta, serving as a home for men who have been through a drug rehabilitation program, and have committed themselves to remain in the program for 6 months.

The boys from The Children’s Village helped prepare and pack lunch bags for 2 hours to help feed men, women and young people who live on the streets of Atlanta, homeless and hungry. The Director at the FISH HOUSE told house parent Mike Cater that our young men saved them approximately 8 hours of work, preparing just under 500 meals.

We are trusting God that He will use these servant-hood projects in our effort to “train up a child in the way he should go”, so that it will help instill in the hearts and minds of our children that it is indeed more “blessed to give than to receive”. It is our prayer that this might encourage our children to live a life of gratitude and service to others in HIS name, so that “when they are old they will not depart from it”.

We have all heard the expression “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure” when folks are discussing their “finds” at yard sales, consignment shops, and thrift stores. Some even say that “Things are better the second time around”. Well, we think you will find “treasures” and “bargains galore” and be a blessing to the children in our care.

Perhaps one of the best “treasures” that you may not be aware of, is that the net proceeds from the sales at Graceland Thrift Store are used to help cover the educational costs of our children at The Children’s Village. Many of the children here come to us with educational, and emotional deprivation. They sometimes have experienced developmental and educational difficulties that require specialized educational settings and assistance to complete their basic education plan.

Abuse takes many forms but it always casts a shadow deep into the soul of the child struggling to make sense of it. Children coming to the Children’s Village at Christian City are too often familiar with the gnawing pain of abandonment, neglect, verbal, emotional, physical or sexual abuse — and the fear and hopelessness that usually tags along. Rare is the child who can remain strong in the face of such challenges. Some lose heart, wondering if God is good, if He really loves them, or if adults can be trusted…or if the sun will ever shine again. Some become downtrodden and defeated, others may lash out.

Because of your kindness as a sponsor, our compassionate houseparents at the Children’s Village can put their arms around these kids and welcome them into a safe, and loving home. They begin opening the windows to their world, letting the light of Christ’s love stream in. They speak kindly to them, give them hugs, worry over them, help them with their homework, and provide food, clothing, and guidance. They pray with them, and tell them that God loves them...and that they love them.

These precious ones who have sometimes experienced more pain in their short lives than many of us will know in a lifetime, can begin to lift their heads to the light of hope, provision, trust and a new day. Christian City’s leaders are dear friends who have given their lives to serving the Lord by serving others. My previous experiences with Christian City charities have left me humbled by the great work they are doing.The work at Christian City has touched my family deeply. My wife Joan’s niece and nephew lived there briefly. Joan’s mother and my uncle used the hospice facility and my grandfather lived in the Christian City nursing home. For me personally, I spent many happy evenings on the Christian City softball fields (now the site of a new building) and currently I’m proud to serve on the advisory committee. Joan and I renew our commitment to Christian City each Christmas by acting as Santa for two children living there.

Simon's Story

Simon (not his real name) came to Christian City in dire straits.

He was wheelchair bound because of a progressive disease that causes bones to become thin and brittle. There was a chance that if he tried to walk, his legs wouldn’t support him and break, but if he didn’t start walking again soon, he would have lost the ability permanently. So it was terrifying to Simon to try to walk on his own.

Ever since coming to Christian City, the houseparents have encouraged him to try standing on his own while holding onto something like a counter or table, and then try using a walker inside instead of the wheelchair. The encouragement progressed and now he is able to move around freely without his wheelchair or a walker. He’s enjoyed playing outside with the other kids and has even danced for the first time at some of the Christmas parties.

Simon still has a way to go with strengthening his body, but he has made tremendous progress! This past month he even went with his housedad on a Christian retreat in Tennessee. Every day there was heavy walking involved and even the housedad said his calves were burning after one day of walking. But Simon never complained and he kept up with everyone, walking the entire time. He’s no longer afraid of crowds and he’s just as proud of his progress as all of the houseparents and staff at Christian City.

Civitans Raise Over $28,000 At Statewide Golf Tournament For Christian City

The Line Creek Civitans and the Fayette County Civitan Clubs joined hands to host a statewide golf tournament which raised over $28,000 for Christian City. The Wii game that enthralls millions of teens has proved remarkably effective in improving the lives of some seniors as well. It is fast becoming a craze in rehab therapy for patients recovering from strokes, broken bones, surgery and even combat injuries.

Economic hardship is hitting us all, especially at the pumps. At the Children's Village, the high price of gas is making it more and more difficult for our house parents to fill up their tanks in order to take our children where they need to be. Whether it is school, a doctor's appointment, basketball, music, dance, a part time job, or other activities, our house parents are on the road constantly transporting our children. Because of your kindness as a sponsor, our compassionate houseparents at the Children’s Village can put their arms around these kids and welcome them into a safe, and loving home. They begin opening the windows to their world, letting the light of Christ’s love stream in. They speak kindly to them, give them hugs, worry over them, help them with their homework, and provide food, clothing, and guidance. They pray with them, and tell them that God loves them...and that they love them.

These precious ones who have sometimes experienced more pain in their short lives than many of us will know in a lifetime, can begin to lift their heads to the light of hope, provision, trust and a new day. Spring has arrived with storms and sunshine much like the life experiences of many of the children placed with us at The Children’s Village. Our children have often withstood the storms of abuse, neglect, and difficult home situations that most of us have never experienced. But now, they bask in the sunshine of love, security, and safety provided by Christian house parents and the programs of The Children’s Village.

It takes all of us to provide the necessary funds and efforts that are needed to continue this successful ministry to help “raise a child” and most importantly, to raise children in a Christian environment.

The Children’s Village could not, nor would not, be possible without the generous support we receive from folks like you through our Child Sponsorship Program. We are deeply grateful for those who are current sponsors making monthly, quarterly, or yearly donations to help provide the basic need of food, shelter, clothing, and the ongoing operations of The Children’s Village.

Spring Fling at Graceland Thrift Store

Graceland Thrift Store,located on the campus of Christian City at 7345 Red Oak Road in Union City, will hold their annual Spring Fling Tent Sale this Friday and Saturday May 8th-9th, from 9am to 3pm. The event is open to the public and will offer bargains galore including new and used electronics, computers, TV’s, radios, toys, cameras, clothing, jewelry, household items and collectibles. There will be food and fun for all ages, something for everyone! All proceeds help pay for the educational expenses for the abandoned and abused children that live in the cottages at The Children’s Village at Christian City.
